Enhancing Community Life Sports, Recreation, and Cultural Center at Parque Metropolitano El Tunal

The Sports, Recreation, and Cultural Center at Parque Metropolitano El Tunal, designed by FP Arquitectura, stands as a significant urban pavilion within the metropolitan park of El Tunal in Bogotá. Designed to cater primarily to the vulnerable population in the southern part of the city, this multifunctional facility integrates cultural, sports, and recreational amenities, bridging the gap between urban infrastructure and natural landscapes.

Architectural Integration

Situated as a gateway between the urban fabric and the expansive parkland, the building’s horizontal layout emphasizes openness, transparency, and permeability. Its architectural identity is characterized by a forest-like arrangement of columns, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. This design choice facilitates a seamless connection between the park’s natural environment and the activities within the building.

Spatial Design and Structural Grid

The building’s spatial composition and structural elements are meticulously organized using a modular grid system, enabling efficient construction and maintenance. With a focus on constructive honesty, the main materials and components are left visible, ensuring longevity and ease of upkeep. The rhythmic repetition of the structural grid not only facilitates natural lighting but also expedites the assembly of the metallic framework.

Programmatic Zones

The center comprises three main areas: water recreation, sports, and cultural. These zones accommodate diverse activities, including swimming, gymnasium workouts, educational classes, playrooms, and cinema screenings. Two courtyards provide direct access to the park and facilitate independent operation of the different areas, allowing for flexible scheduling and utilization.

Sustainable Practices

Incorporating sustainable practices, the building preserves existing trees within the park, integrating them into interior courtyards. Natural light floods the interior through glass facades, reducing energy consumption. Additionally, during construction, excavated earth from the pools was repurposed to shape slopes and perimeter gardens, minimizing environmental impact.
