Redefining Community Spaces Sports Hall in Abruzzo

Situated in a quaint village amidst the scenic Abruzzo countryside in Italy, the Sports Hall stands as a beacon of modern architecture and community engagement. Designed by Carlo Gaspari Architetti in collaboration with Beatrice Comelli Architetto, this building establishes a direct connection with the surrounding square, rendering it a focal point for the entire service area.

Architectural Design

The Sports Hall’s design embodies a harmonious blend of transparency and solidity, with its volume divided into two levels. The first level, characterized by its permeable and transparent façade crafted from polycarbonate, invites natural light and creates a welcoming ambiance. In contrast, the second level features a sleek dark concrete exterior, adding a sense of grounding to the structure.

Interactive Spaces

An entrance ramp guides visitors into the building, while an external cover provides shelter and entertainment for those lingering outside. Through strategically placed glass windows, passersby catch glimpses of the bustling activities within the gymnasium. Inside, the layout caters to the needs of both school children and athletes, with separate entrances ensuring smooth access for all users.

Functional Considerations

During the day, the polycarbonate façade plays with shadows, casting dynamic patterns that enliven the building’s exterior. Meanwhile, the black concrete base provides stability and houses the main play areas. A thoughtful use of color and geometric elements further enhances the interior, creating an atmosphere of vibrancy and vitality.

Community Engagement

The Sports Hall serves as a hub of activity, hosting school children during the day and volleyball teams in the afternoon. With its strategic location near the city hall, stadium, and swimming pool, it fosters a sense of community and connectivity. Additionally, plans for covered shelters ensure safe passage for students, even on rainy days, further enhancing the building’s accessibility and inclusivity.

As the Sports Hall in Abruzzo stands as a testament to innovative design and community-centered architecture, it enriches the lives of residents and visitors alike, nurturing a vibrant and cohesive community spirit.
