Sameura Canoe Terrace Bridging Architecture and Nature

The Sameura Canoe Terrace, a collaborative project by TA+A, Wakuda Kosuke Architects, and Sanai Architects, stands as a tribute to the harmonious coexistence of human habitation and natural landscapes. Situated amidst the mountainous terrain of the Reihoku region, the terrace embraces the region’s inherent beauty while offering a modern space for leisure and outdoor activities.

Embracing Natural Resources

The design ethos of the Sameura Canoe Terrace revolves around awakening the latent resources of the surrounding area. Nestled between mountains and a flowing river, the settlement capitalizes on the natural topography to create a serene living environment in harmony with nature. Lake Sameura, a symbol of the region, adds to the allure, serving as a focal point for both locals and visitors.

Integrating Human Ingenuity

The architects pay homage to the region’s agricultural heritage by incorporating rice terraces into the landscape. These terraces, meticulously crafted by local communities, seamlessly blend with the natural slopes, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. The project celebrates the symbiotic relationship between human activity and the existing landscape, enhancing the charm of the mountainous region.

Architectural Synergy with the Environment

Rather than imposing itself on the surroundings, the architecture of the Sameura Canoe Terrace integrates seamlessly with the natural terrain. The former youth house, Sameura-so, was delicately relocated to preserve its historical significance, while new structures were carefully woven into the landscape. The large floating roof, inspired by the surrounding mountains, serves as a unifying element, enhancing the site’s appeal for leisure and tourism activities.

Fostering Community Engagement

The central open space, offering panoramic views of the lake, serves as a hub for outdoor activities and nature experiences. Designed to be flexible, it welcomes visitors for various recreational pursuits. Additionally, the expansive eaves create inviting intermediate spaces, encouraging breaks and social interaction. By fostering community engagement and promoting sports tourism, the Sameura Canoe Terrace aims to become a catalyst for the region’s development and growth.

In essence, the Sameura Canoe Terrace exemplifies a holistic approach to architecture, where human creativity and environmental stewardship converge to create a sustainable and vibrant community space.
