Shed Roof Inspiration Sports Hall for the Max-Planck School
In the heart of Rüsselsheim, Germany, the Max-Planck School is set to receive a modern sports hall designed by Loewer + Partner Architekten. Drawing inspiration from the industrial heritage of the area, particularly the shed roofs that emerged in the 19th century, the new sports facility promises to be a beacon of innovation and functionality.
Shed Roof Design
The design of the sports hall’s roof takes cues from nearby factory buildings, reminiscent of Rüsselsheim’s industrial past. Shed roofs offer several advantages, including ample natural light without casting harsh shadows or causing glare inside the building. Additionally, the north orientation of the roof helps regulate indoor temperatures by minimizing direct solar radiation, thus reducing unnecessary heat buildup.
Architectural Elements
Key to the shed roof design are the individual elements known as “Reiter,” each comprising a sloped roof area and a window area designed to optimize natural light penetration. The new sports hall, situated on the grounds of the Max-Planck School, will encompass not only the main sports hall but also a multipurpose room and ancillary spaces. Its single-story layout ensures accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Construction Details
Constructed primarily of reinforced concrete, the sports hall features a sturdy foundation and walls clad in galvanized steel sheeting. The shed roof, crafted from wood, adds a touch of warmth to the structure’s aesthetic. The color palette of the building harmonizes with its surroundings, seamlessly blending into the architectural fabric of the area.
Sustainable Features
With a focus on durability and sustainability, the flooring of the sports hall boasts linoleum—a resilient and eco-friendly choice. The hall and locker rooms feature ground poured asphalt screed, ensuring robustness and longevity. Acoustic considerations are addressed through the use of bulging wall panels and trapezoidal sheet ceilings, enhancing the overall user experience.
As the Sports Hall for the Max-Planck School takes shape, it stands as a testament to thoughtful design, sustainable construction practices, and a commitment to creating inclusive and accessible community spaces.
