Transforming Experimentarium with VELUX Atrium Longlight Skylights
Experimentarium’s Revival
Experimentarium stands as Denmark’s premier science attraction, dedicated to making science engaging and accessible for people of all ages. It serves as an informal learning hub, supplementing formal education with interactive exhibits and hosting a conference center alongside administrative offices. A significant redevelopment doubled the exhibition space, introducing 16 interactive exhibitions to captivate visitors.
Architectural Challenge
Renowned architects CEBRA faced a formidable task in reimagining Experimentarium, transitioning it from a dark and introverted space to a vibrant, light-filled environment. Balancing the need for darkness in specific exhibition areas with the requirement for ample daylight in administrative zones posed a unique challenge. Moreover, the tight construction
deadline added pressure to deliver a transformative space for public enjoyment.
Innovative Solutions
CEBRA’s design solution involved constructing stacked, counter-balanced box structures to modernize the building’s appearance while retaining elements of the traditional red brickwork. Two expansive atriums were created, with the first housing a striking copper-clad spiral staircase, inspired by the double-helix structure of DNA. The second atrium featured a mathematically inspired staircase. To enhance these architectural marvels, VELUX Modular Skylights were installed in each atrium, flooding the spaces with natural daylight and contrasting the darker exhibition areas.
Skylight Functions and Features
The VELUX Skylights served three primary functions within the building:
- Daylight Provision: They introduced quality daylight into the atriums, creating visually stunning reflections off the staircase surfaces.
- Ventilation Integration: The skylights were integrated into the building’s ventilation system, ensuring optimal air circulation and comfort throughout the year.
- Smoke Ventilation: In compliance with safety regulations, the skylights functioned as smoke vents, capable of rapid opening during emergencies.
The modular design of VELUX Skylights offered several advantages:
- Flexibility: Easy integration of additional ventilation modules as needed.
- Speed: Efficient installation was crucial to meet project deadlines, and the skylights facilitated a swift closure of the building.

Successful Outcome
Experimentarium’s reopening was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, attracting 100,000 guests within the first two months. The significant uptake of annual season passes reflects visitors’ eagerness to return and relish the transformed environment. Experimentarium’s employees also appreciated the influx of natural daylight into internal office spaces, enhancing productivity and well-being. The project’s success not only revitalized Experimentarium but also contributed a landmark building to Copenhagen’s cultural landscape, garnering international recognition in the architectural realm.
